Summer Screams

Summer horror just hits different.

Maybe it’s the magic of summer itself: the smell of barbecue in the air, the buzz of carnival lights, the sticky sweetness of fair food, the crickets and creatures lulling you to sleep, the empty schools, the crowded beaches, the late-night bonfires, and the way every small-town parade feels both wholesome and … off?

Whatever the reason, summer is prime time for things to go sideways. Camp counselors make terrible choices. Beach towns ignore obvious warning signs. Suburbs watch you a little too closely. And somewhere out on a back road, someone is definitely saying, “The guy back at the gas station said it’s this next right.”

This is my love letter to Americana summer horror: slashers, seaside panic, suburban secrets, sweaty rural nightmares, and all the well-deserved summer vacations that feel just a little cursed once the sun goes down. As you make your way through the list, you will find a few surprises lurking in the shadows, including a fully themed movie date night inspired by one of these summer screams.

So grab something cold, lock the screen door, and enjoy the season. The fireworks are loud, but the screams are louder.

Aquatic Haunts

Nothing says summer like a relaxing trip to the water, unless the water is full of sharks, parasites, secrets, or the consequences of terrible teenage decisions. These picks turn beaches, bays, and coastal towns into places where a sunburn is the least of your concerns.

Jaws (1975)

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

The Bay (2012)

This "found-footage" film is set in 2009 in the town of Claridge, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. During the town's annual 4th of July Crab Festival, townspeople become sick, exhibiting a variety of symptoms, leading local news reporters to suspect that the water there is contaminated. No one is sure what it is or how it's transmitted, but as people start to behave strangely and others start turning up dead, fear spawns panic. The town is shut down as government authorities confiscate video footage from every media or personal source they find, in an effort to cover up the incident. But one local reporter who witnessed the epidemic was able to document, assemble, and hide this film in hopes that one day, the horrible truth would be revealed.

Summer Camp Slashers

Camp is all fun and games until the counselors start disappearing. These movies are packed with cabins, campfires, bad choices, and the kind of outdoor activities that should really require a final girl waiver.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Camp Crystal Lake sits dormant, haunted by drowning and double murder. A fresh crew of counselors arrives to resurrect it, optimistic, oblivious, and working against a clock they cannot see. Someone is watching from the treeline. The killings begin quietly, one counselor at a time pulled from the periphery, while the storm rolls in and the phones go dead. What started as a summer job collapses into a siege. Alice, the last one standing, finds herself not just fighting for survival but confronting the grief of a mother the world forgot to mourn.
