The Ultimate Spooky Season Bucketlist: 13 Terrifyingly Fun Things to Do

Our time is HERE! The crisp morning air is finally greeting us; we’re no longer sweating the second we put on our favorite sweater, and the leaves are turning those haunting, fiery shades of red and orange. Fall has finally arrived.

This Spooky Season bucket list is filled with some of my personal favorite things to do during fall. And honestly, a few things I do year-round just to keep the spooky spirit alive. Scroll through for more details on each idea, and start checking them off before fall gets devoured by winter.

  • Go leaf peeping

Not to brag, but Colorado has some AMAZING drives to watch the aspens turn. I never thought I would say this, but the haunting sounds the aspens make when the wind blows through them have become one of my favorite fall views. Here are some of the best places in Colorado to see this.

  • Take a local ghost tour

Forget a regular tour. You want to know about a place, hear about its ghosts. Here is one of my favorite ghost tours: US Ghost Adventures!

  • Tell ghost stories

Let’s be honest, ghost stories are amazing year-round, but it is so much fun to read them by the fireplace, candlelight, or in complete darkness (I guess good luck seeing the words, though)

  • Go through a haunted corn maze

I went through one our first year here, and they are so much fun and a different vibe than going through a haunted house. So if you have a friend with claustrophobia issues, they will still be scared, but maybe a bit more willing to participate! Here are some top-rated corn maze attractions in CO: Terror in the Corn (Erie, CO) and Haunted Field of Screams (Thornton, CO)

  • Go pick apples

Call me basic, but this is so much fun! Especially if you bake up some haunted desserts and goodies after.

  • Attend a costume ball

I am OBSESSED with the different costumes you can wear at a ball. This would be so much fun if the traditional costumes are not your vibe, or you

  • Horror movie marathon

You knew this one was coming, so the question is: are you doing 31 Days of Halloween, or looking for a more comprehensive list of vibes and themes this year?

  • Stay at an old motel/hotel

I'm not saying go somewhere unsafe, but find a place that looks creaky, with plenty of stories within its walls.

  • Have a candlelit dinner

Put on your best outfits, cook up a 7-course meal, pretend you are a vampire. Candlelight makes everything taste a million times better. Not the full 7 courses, but my favorite vampire-themed dinner is over here.

  • Bake all the treats

Now that my house will not jump up to 90* if I even think of turning on the oven, there is no stopping me.

  • Visit a pumpkin patch

You also knew this one was coming, but some places have a festival attached to their pumpkin patches, like Smith Farms in Peyton, CO. Some might charge to go in, but I have always enjoyed making a day of getting pumpkins; it really makes it feel like the perfect fall day.

  • Visit a haunted house

This can be a fun date night idea or a group outing, especially if you grab treats or drinks afterward.

  • Host a themed horror movie night

Probably one of my favorite things to do year-round, but it’s even more special on a crisp fall night. We had an unusually warm fall last year, so we did a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-themed movie night with some amazing fall dishes.
