Monster Mash Cookout

As someone who notoriously hates the heat, I LOVE a good bbq and love a good theme even more. Something about a sizzling grill and a hauntingly good group of friends makes the sticky heat worth it.

You’ve seen it all over your social media, it’s finally time to kill it

If you are like me, sometimes I bite off way more than I can chew when it comes to crafty, fun, viral things. So here is my rating of how many stabs it took for me to get it right.

🔪 = Child’s Play ( Cute, easy, beginner-friendly)

🔪🔪 = Scream (A little frustration may occur, but still having fun)

🔪🔪🔪 = A Nightmare on Cooking Street (More involved. Takes patience, precision, multiple techniques, and tools)

🔪🔪🔪🔪 = Hellraiser (Advanced or finicky. Lots of steps, specialized skills/tools, tiny details. Godspeed)

Jack O' Latern Cheeseburgers and Mummy Dogs with Coffin Chips

These were all over my feed this summer, and I had to try them all.

Ingredients

Coffin Chips
Jack O' Latern Cheeseburgers
Mummy Dogs

Instructions

Coffin Chips
  1. Slice your potatoes to your desired chip thickness; for us, it was the smallest level. As someone who has cut themselves on a mandolin, I would use cut-resistant gloves; it's worth it
  2. Once you're done with your potatoes, stack the slices on top of each other (I wouldn't do more than 10) and press your cookie cutter down. See note 1
  3. Put your coffins into ice water to start removing the starch
  4. There will be "scrap" pieces of potato; don't throw them away; they will also make great chips too! Just add them to the water with the coffins.
  5. After soaking for 30 min, drop them into your fryer. We just used a deep pan with vegetable oil heated to 375*.
  6. Drop in a few potato pieces at a time; do not crowd them. They will not fry right, and the oil could boil over, which is a huge safety issue. See note 2
  7. Once golden and brown, remove the chips and place them in a paper towel-lined bowl. Sprinkle whatever seasoning you want on the chips when they are hot.
  8. Repeat steps 6 -7 until you are all done!
Jack O' Latern Cheeseburgers
  1. Season your ground beef with salt and pepper, and roll into 4 quarter-pound balls.
  2. Using a paring knife, cut out your jack-o'-lantern faces in your American cheese. Place back into the fridge until ready to use
  3. On your grill, stove, or flat top. Press your hamburger out as flat as you prefer. I personally only like smash burgers, so I try to go as thin as possible. Cook for about 2 min on each side. If your burger is thicker, you will need more time on each side.
  4. If you like grilled onions: When you go to make your first flip, place the thinly sliced onions on top of the raw burger; flip the burger with the onions below. Continue to cook.
  5. When you are about 1 minute out, place your Jack O'Lantern cheese on top of your burger.
  6. Dress your burger however you prefer and enjoy!
Mummy Dogs
  1. Open up Crescent rolls (without screaming)
  2. Connect the dotted lines together so they don't split
  3. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut long slices of the dough
  4. Take your hot dog and spiral the dough in different directions and ways to make it look "wrapped"
  5. Place on a lined cookie sheet and bake in a 375 ° oven until the crescent dough is golden brown. (Mine was about 20 minutes)

Notes

  1. I found that punching the cookie cutter through and lifting the potato around it was the easiest way to keep the cut as clean as possible.
  2. If your oil does boil over, IMMEDIATELY turn off your stove and smother the fire. DO NOT use water for an oil fire. I linked my fire blanket, pull down and drape across the fire to fully smother it.

Garlic Monster Bread

Have extra crescent dough from your mummy dogs? Fear not, some great cheese and garlic and you have a quick side.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375*
  2. Take your crescent roll dough and fill each section with enough dough to reach the bottom, with about 1/2 inch of overlap on top. Don't worry too much about pressing in on the bottom; focus more on pressing into the sides so the dough will go in there when it rises.
  3. Place in your cheese and garlic, and seal up your dough
  4. If you have open spaces on your molds, fill those with water to ensure even cooking.
  5. Put in your preheated oven and cook for 25 minutes or until your rolls look golden brown on top. Immediately remove them from the molds and place on the non-design side to cool
